Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are you a registered charity?

Yes.

2. Is everything offered at the WICWC really free? How is this possible?

Yes everything is 100% free of charge. The team at the WICWC works extremely hard fundraising so that you’ll not have to pay for our programs and services.

3. How are you funded?

We fundraise. We do not receive any funding from the Federal or Provincial governments, nor hospitals, nor any major cancer society or association. We rely solely on donations from individuals, corporations, companies, and foundations.

4. If I want to support the Centre, how can I do so?

We greatly appreciate your donations, and we make it as easy as possible for you.

i. Donate online (www.wicwc.org) or donate by cheque (made out to WICWC) and mail it to: WICWC, 489 Beaconsfield Blvd., Beaconsfield, QC H9W 4C3.

1. Tax receipts are provided quarterly for all donations of $25+

ii. You can also donate on a monthly basis, to make giving easily affordable.

We greatly appreciate it when you ask others to support the WICWC.

i. Inform your friends, clubs, and organizations that we need their support. They can do so via:

1. Donations

2. Third-party fundraisers (see more about these on our website: www.wicwc.org)

5. Can I volunteer at the Centre?

If you’re registered at the Centre (using our programs and services): No. We believe that it’s important for you to focus on yourself as you’re encountering cancer – from diagnosis to one-year post-treatment. Once you’re past the one-year post-treatment stage, you can then apply online (www.wicwc.org) to be considered for volunteering.

If you’re not registered as a participant of the WICWC: Yes! Please go to our website to and complete the volunteer application. We will be in contact with you as soon as possible following the receipt of your application.

6. Who can use your programs and services?

Anyone—no matter where you live—of any age, who is experiencing any type of cancer, in any stage (caregiver or patient) can register (see question #7 for more information).

7. How do I start using WICWC programs and services?

We ask you to register with us as a participant:

i. Simply call us (514-695-9355) for an appointment to meet with a WICWC Wellness Guide (who will talk to you about your needs and the Centre, and who will follow up with you periodically)

8. Do you communicate with the medical doctors?

During registration, you’ll be given a medical authorization form to present to your doctor. This form: 1) Lets your medical team know you’re participating in our programs 2) Provides the WICWC pertinent medical information.
If your health status changes after you’ve completed this form, it’s your responsibility as a participant to make sure we receive a revised medical form.

9. How long can I belong to the WICWC?

From diagnosis to one year post-treatment. We consider “treatment” as active treatment. For example, if someone is on hormone therapy, this isn’t considered “active treatment”, as it’s more of a prevention medication.
If you’re a caregiver and, unfortunately, your loved one dies, you no longer qualify to be a participant; however, possible extended-support exceptions are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

10. Can I have more than one caregiver register with me? (e.g. spouse, son/daughter, friend)

Absolutely, we believe in caring for those who care about you.

11. Aside from volunteering at the Centre, where do the professionals who give the programs and services actually work?

All of our professionals volunteer their time and expertise to the WICWC. Most of them also practice their expertise at their own place of business.

12. If I know a professional who might like to volunteer time at the Centre, what do I do?

Please ask this professional to go to our website and fill out the Volunteer Professional application form. We will get back to him/her as soon as possible.

13. If I choose to attend a group support session, will they make me talk or can I just sit and listen?

You decide to participant as much or as little as you wish. The WICWC is about you deciding what programs meet your wellness goals.

14. What kinds of things are discussed in the group support?

Discussion topics vary according to the type of group and needs of the individuals in the group. Each meeting usually has a set topic that varies depending on the week, the group, and the facilitator.

15. Does your logo have any particular meaning?

The logo is our version of the Bodhi tree—the oldest living tree in recorded history—a source of energy and inspiration, a symbol of peace, enlightenment, strength, and a reminder of the ultimate potential that lies within each of us.

16. Where can I park my car?

Please park in the Jean Coutu parking lot (directly east of the Centre) or other available spaces on Beaconsfield Blvd.

17. How often am I allowed to come to the Centre/certain classes?

As often as you wish; but please note, in fairness to all and sometimes due to popularity, we may have to place restrictions on how often you can attend a particular program or service.

18. Do I have to come to activities all the time or can I just come when I want to?

You decide. Every month, by email, you’ll receive our program calendar, you select what you wish to attend and then call us to sign up for your choices.

19. Do I have to undress or wear something specific for the “energy” programs?

No you’ll remain fully clothed, but please wear comfortable clothing.

20. Am I supposed to tip the professionals?

Please do not tip. If you’d like to “give back”, you can make a donation to the West Island Cancer Wellness Centre via cheque or by going to our website www.wicwc.org.

21. Will participating in activities at the Centre affect my treatment?

YES, it will positively affect your treatment. Studies have shown that there is a positive affect in tending to all the facets of your wellness—mind, body, and spirit.

22. How is my information/confidentiality protected at the Centre?

Everyone working or volunteering at the Centre is bound by signing a confidentiality agreement which states that all information acquired within the Centre remains strictly within the Centre.

23. How can I provide you feedback or suggestions about the Centre?

We value your feedback. There are two ways you can give us the feedback, either by filling out a form in the library and placing it in the box provided. OR, you can email your comments to info@wicwc.org

24. What if my doctor charges me a fee for the medical form? Do I still have to do it?

Some doctors may charge, this is left to your doctor’s discretion. However, our medical authorization form is required and is in place for your protection, and to enable us to provide you with the best individualized, quality of care.

25. Are there children involved in the activities at the Centre? Will I see them around a lot?

WICWC programs and services are open to people with any type of cancer, from any geographical area, and of any age. So, yes there may be children benefitting from our programs and services. But we do have a Children’s Wellness Program initiative which they attend at a specific time.

26. What are the programs and services that you offer?

Our programs and services are divided into three areas: Mind, Body, and Spirit. You can select whichever program or service meets your needs.
i. Once registered with the Centre, to keep you informed, each month you’ll receive our WICWC Programming Calendar via email. You can also visit our website to download a copy.
